Twenty Interesting Things About… Titanic

Here are twenty interesting things you may not know about the The RMS Titanic. (As will always be the case with this Twenty Interesting Things… series, please feel free to jump in with more information, or to correct any inaccuracies, as my name ain’t EncycloREEdia.) (I promise I’ll do away with that joke soon!)

1. Construction on Titanic began on March 31, 1909 in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
2. Construction was completed in May 1911.
3. The designers of Titanic never, despite opinion to the contrary, claimed Titanic was “unsinkable.” They did claim that because of its construction, the ship was “virtually unsinkable” but the word “virtually” was left out in much of the reporting. What a difference…a word makes…
4. Every single item on board Titanic was purchased new or custom made—even the china, iron railings, and furnishings.
5. 300 men worked in shifts around the clock to shovel coal into boilers. This ensured the engines ran at top speed.
6. Out of a crew of 900, only eighteen were women. This was said to be rooted in a longstanding superstition that women brought bad luck to ships. Seventeen of the stewardesses made it on lifeboats and survived the disaster.
7. Colonel John Jacob Astor IV was the wealthiest passenger on board, with an estimated wealth of $87 million.
8. A first-class stateroom on Titanic—which included a sitting room, two bedrooms, two dressing rooms, a private deck, and a private bathroom—cost $4,200 for the trip. (Someone calculate what that would be in 2011 dollars.)
9. Over half of Titanic’s passengers were traveling in third class, also called “steerage.” Most were emigrating to America. The cost of a third class ticket was said to be $36.25.
10. The iceberg was spotted at 11:40 pm on April 14, 1912 and struck the ship’s starboard side.
11. Titanic had fifteen bulkheads (a series of vertical partitions in the bottom of the ship), each of which had watertight doors. Only twelve of the doors (a little over a third of the doors) could be closed automatically from the bridge, however; the others had to be closed by hand. When the ship collided with the iceberg, some of the manually-operated doors were left open. In addition, the bulkheads were only ten feet above the waterline, so when the ship began to sink, water poured over the top of the bulkheads into the next, etc. This rendered the watertight bulkheads ineffective.
12. The closest ship to respond to Titanic’s distress call was Carpathia, which was 58 miles (four hours) away.
13. Titanic finally sank at 2:20 am. Carpathia began rescuing survivors from lifeboats at 4:10 am. She rescued the last of the passengers at 8:30, then left for New York at 8:50.
14. Many passengers and crew were confused about how the lifeboats should work, and many thought the boats should first be lowered into the water before people boarded. This is one reason many lifeboats were launched with less than full capacity. The first lifeboat launched with 28 people, despite its capacity for 65.
15. If all the lifeboats were filled to capacity, 1,178 people would have survived instead of 706.
16. The ship has a maximum allowed capacity of 3,547, but lifeboat space for only 1,178 people. Of the 2,223 on board the ship when it sank, 1,517 died. The majority of deaths were caused by hypothermia.
17. There was a ship (the SS Californian) that was much closer to Titanic than Carpathia. Both the US and British inquiries into the disaster found that the SS Californian and her captain failed to come to the rescue of Titanic’s passengers. A 1992 report found that Californian had actually been farther away than originally thought.
18. The wreckage of Titanic was undiscovered until September 1, 1985, when it was discovered by a joint French-American expedition.
19. It is said that Captain Smith downplayed iceberg warnings early in the evening and declined to reduce the speed of the ship. The US findings blamed Captain Smith’s “indifference to danger” and “overconfidence and neglect” for the disaster. The British inquiry found “that the loss of the said ship was due to collision with an iceberg, brought about by the excessive speed at which the ship was being navigated” but failed to find Captain Smith negligent.
20. In 1898, before Titanic had ever been designed, a retired merchant marine wrote Futility or The Wreck of the Titan. The book was about a ship that hit an iceberg and sank as it was attempting to cross the Atlantic faster than any ship had and is said to contain chilling similarities to the real-live disaster that happened fourteen years later.

Twenty Interesting Things About…Shakespeare

I can’t promise I won’t be posting new Twenty Things… lists throughout this week. We’re all about breadth of knowledge here on PW Homeschooling! No depth…just breadth. That’s my motto. Okay, so it’s not really my motto. As far as you know.
I also can’t promise some of these facts (and those from all Twenty Things… posts) won’t show up in a possible Smartypants quiz
Let’s learn more about Slick Willie, also known as The Bard!

1. William Shakespeare was born in 1564, but his exact birthdate is unknown. He was baptized on April 26 of that year, so his birth would have been shortly before.
2. Shakespeare did not go to college.
3. Shakespeare was eighteen when he married Anne Hathaway in 1582. She was 26 and expecting his baby. SCANDAL! The couple had a baby girl, then had twins, a boy and a girl, in 1584.
4. Sometime in the mid 1580′s, Shakespeare moved to London from his home in Stratford-upon-Avon.
5. Almost no information exists about Shakespeare’s activities from the time he moved to London to 1592, when he was described as an up-and-coming playwright in the London theater scene. Because of this, the years 1585 to 1592 are called “the lost years”.
6. According to reports, Shakespeare wrote quickly and with ease; Fellow playwright Ben Jonson said “Whatsoever he penned, he never blotted out a line.”
7. Because of the plague outbreak in Europe, all London playhouses were closed between 1592 and 1594 because it was thought that crowded places helped facilitate the spread of the disease.
8. During this period, because there was no demand for Shakespeare’s plays, he began to write poetry.
9. In 1594, Shakespeare became one of the founders of Lord Chamberlain’s Men, an acting/theater group that soon became the leading player’s company in London.
10. In 1597, the theater in which The Lord Chamberlain’s Men performed was forced to close since it had been built on leased land. Many partners invested in a new theater built on the south bank of the Thames river. The new theater was called The Globe.
11. Plays were performed only in the afternoon, by daylight.
12. Laws at the time prohibited people from dressing above their rank in life. Players (actors) were the only exception to this rule, and could dress as noblemen on stage without being arrested and locked in the stocks.
13. Women were not allowed to act in plays during Shakespeare’s time, so in all of his plays, women’s roles were performed by boys/young men. (This meant that in As You Like It, the boy player had to play Rosalind, a woman who pretends to be a man pretending to be…a woman! [If I described that correctly, someone bring me a doughnut.)
14. Though the printing press existed and books were being mass-produced all over Europe, Shakespeare had little interest in seeing his plays in print. He’d written them not to be read, but to be performed on stage.
15. Because they were often hastily written for performance on stage, none of Shakespeare’s original manuscripts exist.
16. Shakespeare returned to Stratford after he finished work on The Tempest, in 1611.
17. He died in 1616. The words “Curst be he that moves my bones” were inscribed on his grave.
18. Seven years after his death, some of Shakespeare’s fellow players published Shakespeare’s plays in a single volume, called First Folio. They wrote that their intention was “only to keep the memory of so worthy a friend, and fellow alive, as was our Shakespeare.”
19. The following commonly used phrases are thought to be originally coined by William Shakespeare (many say these combinations of words did not appear in print before Shakespeare’s works):
All that glitters is not gold
All’s well that ends well
Bated breath
Dead as a doornail
Fancy-free
Fool’s paradise
For goodness’ sake
Good riddance
Heart of gold
In a pickle
Knock knock! Who’s there?
Laughing stock
Love is blind
Naked truth
Neither rhyme nor reason
One fell swoop
Star-crossed lovers
Pomp and circumstance
Pound of flesh
Primrose path
Too much of a good thing
Wear my heart upon my sleeve
What’s in a name?
Wild goose chase
The world’s my oyster

20. Shakespeare’s was said to have an extensive vocabular; his works contained more than 30,000 different words.

A fatal head on collision in France...
5) In 1968, at age 21, Mitt Romney was involved in a fatal head on car crash while serving as a missionary in France when a Mercedes driven by an intoxicated Catholic priest swerved into his lane. One of his passengers was killed and Romney ended up pinned so badly, rescue crews had to pry him from the car. He suffered broken ribs, a fractured arm, concussion and facial injuries. French police found the other driver at fault in the accident.

Governor Romney refuses salary for 4 years

Mitt Romney saves kidnapped girl with massive rescue effort
7) In 1996, Mitt Romney helped rescue the kidnapped daughter of business partner Robert Gay. After Gay had notified Romney that his daughter was missing, Romney shut down Bain Capital entirely and flew 30 workers to New York City where he set up a command center to facilitate the search for the 14 year old girl. Romney also hired a private detective, established a toll free hotline for tips, contacted all of Bain Capital's business partners in the city and coordinated with the NYPD. Not long after, a call came in which police traced to a basement in New Jersey where the 14 year old girl was found shivering and in deteriorating health from a massive drug overdose. Doctors stated she might not have survived another day. Said Robert Gay, "It was the most amazing thing and I'll never forget it till the day I die."

Mitt builds relationship with cancer stricken boy
8) In 1979, Mitt Romney visited and comforted a 14 year old boy with terminal cancer. At the Republican National Convention, Ted and Pat Oparowski recalled the relationship between Mitt Romney and their terminally ill son, David Oparowski, who was undergoing treatment in the hospital. "They developed a loving friendship," Pat Oparowski said. David, knowing Romney was a lawyer, requested Mitt write down his will. He also wanted Mitt to pronounce his eulogy. Romney honored both requests, and was reported to have visited David Oparowski many times in the hospital before his death.

Olympic miracle profit, and all to charity...
9) Before accepting the position of CEO for the 2002 Winter Olympics, Mitt Romney stated he would not accept any salary or severance pay for the job unless the event made a profit. After reversing the financially troubled Games' debt to a profit, he donated his entire earnings and severance pay to charity.

Romney rescue on Lake Winnipesaukee
10) In 2006, Mitt Romney, along with sons Josh and Craig, rescued six people and a dog on Lake Winnipesaukee after the family's boat sank some 300 yards from shore. According to Josh Romney, he and his brother Craig were cleaning the beach that night while Mitt was tinkering in the garage when they heard screams coming from the lake. After seeing the bobbing heads of the capsized family, Josh and Craig immediately jumped on their jetski with Mitt following close behind on the other jetski. The three Romneys plucked the struggling family members, 3 men and 3 women, from the water while making trips back and forth to and from the beach. Mitt Romney himself took a tumble into the water when a frantic victim tipped over his jetski while trying to climb aboard. All 6 people and the dog were safely transported back to dry land.

Top 10 Most Dangerous Places on Earth

In keeping with this site’s love of helping out with holiday plans, this is a list on the top 10 most dangerous places in the world – these are all places you might consider not visiting when planning your next holiday. Some of the items may be a little controversial, but you are, of course, free to ignore our advice and go anyway!

Russia
20060608-Nationalists-Russia
In this crime-ridden, ex-Soviet state, no longer does the government stuff their Armani suits with rubles, but the vandals and gangsters. The Russian mafia runs amuck, there are more gangsters than police, and a Russian is assassinated every 18 minutes, averaging 84 murders per day in a nation of 143 million. The nucleus of Russian crime is stationed in the Republic of Chechnya, a region within Russia just north of Georgia. Prostitution, drug trafficking, and underground restaurants are arbitrarily controlled by the Chechens. Foreigners are kidnapped more frequently due to the higher ransom allocated. Crimes towards include but are not limited to: pick pocketing wallets, cell phones, cameras, cash, and physical assaults. From superpower to Third World country, think tanks are beginning to speculate if communism really was the cure for Russia. [Source]

Brazil
Ap Brazilpolice2
For anyone traveling to Brazil, it is not a matter of whether you get mugged, it is a matter of when! Grinding poverty still lives alongside incredible wealth in a country that is riding a wave of economic growth. But with prosperity, rates of crime have also soared. Street crime is rampant in parts of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo, and whilst many victims are left unharmed, having a broken bottle put to your throat for your bracelet is not pleasant. The incidences of “quicknappings” has risen in major cities. This involves being abducted and taken to an ATM to pay your ransom. If you can’t pay, thanks to mobile technology, your family is only a call away. Along with street crime, organized criminal groups have waged wars against police and public institutions that were unable to be bribed. Prison riots are brutally suppressed, drugs and narco-terrorism claim civilian casualties and if you survive all that – the piranhas are waiting.

South Africa
20060827-Firearms
Any nation described as the ‘rape capital of the world’ should be one to take extra special care in. Although rape had shown a declining trend to 113.7 in 2004, it increased in 2005 to 118.3 per 100 000. Another damning statistic for South Africa is its appallingly high murder rate. The 2010 World Cup host is consistently in the Top 5 list of countries by homicide rate. Most crime is confined to poor areas but it hasn’t stopped gated communities springing up all over South Africa and armed guards protecting wealthy tourist groups. Farming in South Africa has become one of the most dangerous professions in the world. The murder rate for farmers is 313 per 100 000 – about 8 times the national average. And like anywhere, sex can be very dangerous in South Africa, where more than 10 million people are infected with HIV.
7
Burundi
Startburundi18
This small, densely populated and poor nation has giant problems. A civil war between Hutus and Tutsis tore the nation apart between 1993 and 2006. A ceasefire was declared however most provisions have not been implemented. Mass murder and mayhem compete with environmental problems as the biggest headaches for the people of Burundi. The list of assassinated leaders is extensive, and control of the nation has changed hands numerous times in the last 50 years. Crimes committed by roaming gangs and armed children are risks for visitors. Muggings, carjackings and kidnappings await, so you are advised not to stop the car for souvenirs. Should you be injured or harmed while in Burundi, you may need to be well trained, as local clinics have almost no resources to assist you.
6
Antarctica
Antarctica-Summer-400-1
While murder, rape and robbery may not be a big problem in this part of the world, the hostile conditions are. Antarctica is home to some extreme weather conditions, with the mercury regularly dropping below -60 degrees Celsius (-100F) and winds tearing in at more than 100km/hr. If exposed to this weather for more than an hour, you will most certainly die. Antarctica has no hospitals, no food to forage and if you get lost, not a lot of hope. Stay with the tour groups. At least there is a McDonald’s at Scott Base if you manage to find it.
5
Afghanistan
011112 Afghanistan
This nation has for hundreds of years, been one of the worlds most strategically important and lusted after territories. However it remains one of the poorest, undeveloped and unstable. During the Soviet invasion, the Red Army planted more than 12 million landmines in Afghanistan. Hundreds of people are killed, shredded, and maimed each year due to these insidious devices. Following the Soviets came the Taliban, whose control meant women were banned from jobs and universities. In 2001, the United States overthrew the Taliban, but banditry, tribal rivalries and drug related violence has left the nation unstable. Suicide bombings are a constant threat, and nobody in Afghanistan is safe. The most lethal suicide attack occurred in Baghlan Province in November 2007, killing more than 70 people. Did I mention Afghanistan is also the worlds largest supplier of top grade hashish and opium?
4.
Somalia
27Somalia.Xlarge1
Somalia is a failed state known for its anarchy, corruption, lack of government, and starvation. Travelers are warned against entering Somalia, the self-proclaimed “independent Republic of Somaliland” or even sailing near the Horn Of Africa. Pirates patrol these waters armed with AK-47s and will seize craft and hold crews to ransom. Inter-clan fighting has claimed thousands of lives in the north of the country, while territorial control in the capital, Mogadishu is carved up between many clans and warlords. Ethiopia attacked Islamic troops in Somalia in late 2006, resulting in hundreds of casualties and the internal displacement of thousands. Heck, if this place is too much for the Marines, what chance do you stand? Make sure your insurance is fully up to date.
3
Sudan
Darfur1
Desperation, death and destruction are synonymous with Sudan. Terrorism is a mainstay of this nation, which has been controlled by Islamic military regimes since its independence. Some of the worlds most famous killers have earned their stripes in Sudan, finishing with degrees in car-bombing, rocket launching and genocide. Violence is rife in the Darfur region between government-backed militias, government troops and local insurgent groups. Sudan has been in open warfare with Chad partly due to the Darfur conflict. Since 2003, 230,000 Sudanese refugees have fled to eastern Chad from Darfur. More than two million have died during the 2 civil wars that spanned the last 50 years. Along with its bleak desert conditions, Sudan is one of the worst places on the planet.
2
Colombia
Colombiankids
Kidnapping is the main worry in Colombia. There were 2338 kidnappings in Colombia in 1998. Of the victims, 138 were killed by their captors. Ranked Fourth in the world for murders with 69.98/100000 in 2006, the popular targets are mayors, with dozens of them being slain each year. And of course, who can forget cocaine? Colombia supplies 75% of the worlds supply and thanks to Pablo Escobar and the Cali Cartel, paramilitary groups have waged war on the government in a bloody conflict with no end in sight. Even those working in the name of charity are not excluded from the frenzy. In 2005, 5 Catholic missionaries were murdered, down from 9 in 1999. Colombia’s beautiful coast and rugged mountains should make it a tourist paradise, instead it is among the most feared destinations you can visit.
1
Iraq
Iraq
It doesn’t matter whether you are George Bush, Pele or Chuck Norris – you are not safe in Iraq. Despite its rich history and its oil reserves, it is a ruined nation that is wracked with violence, despair and confusion. Since 2003, the United States has occupied Iraq which has led to a civil war claiming the lives of more than 650 000 civilians. Al-Qaeda, Sunni insurgents, Shiite security forces, Kurdish rebels, American soldiers, Turkish troops and criminals are involved in a cycle of violence that unfortunately, will not abate any time soon. Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), Explosively Formed Penetrators (EFPs) and mines are a constant threat, as are suicide bombers who have slain hundreds. Kidnappings and random killings are reported with almost mind-numbing frequency. Since 2003, 2 million Iraqis have fled to neighboring countries and another 1.9 million in Iraq remain internally displaced. Depleted uranium used as armor-piercing rounds will poison Iraqi civilians and US servicemen for decades. Truly, a hell on earth.
Bonus
United States of America
Usa Police State-1
For the average traveller, the USA is fairly safe, but the numbers do not lie. There are more than 200 million guns in the USA and more than 50 murders a day, 10 times the rate of Germany. Nearly 5000 people die a year in truck crashes, about 6000 pedestrains die on the streets and 31000 people end their own lives. The USA now leads all nations in violent crime and leads all nations with incarcerations now standing at 2.3 million. American citizens also make up the greatest number of criminals serving time in overseas prisons. Militias, hate groups and other right wing radicals all spread their message of violence and are known to throw around the odd pipe-bomb. The government is not much better, spending a whopping $600 billion a year on defense in order to contain the handful of nations hostile to it.
Dishonorable Mentions: Haiti, Liberia, and Congo.
